The Apple Newton MessagePad was the original personal digital assistant, a pen-based handheld launched in 1993 whose headline feature, handwriting recognition, famously did not work. The story
The ambition
The Newton was supposed to invent a category, and in a sense it did. Apple's CEO John Sculley coined the term "PDA," personal digital assistant, at the January 1992 Consumer Electronics Show, and promised Apple would ship one for under $1,000. The vision was bold: a handheld, pen-driven computer you could write on with a stylus and that would read your handwriting, keep your calendar and contacts, and go everywhere with you. Sculley bet Apple's prestige on it and predicted mobile computing would become a multibillion-dollar industry, a forecast he was ridiculed for at the time.
The rise
When the Newton MessagePad went on sale on August 2, 1993 at $699, it drew enormous attention as a glimpse of the future. Its ambitions ran so far ahead of existing chips that Apple could not buy a processor capable of what Sculley wanted, so the Newton team helped create one, spinning up a joint venture with Acorn and VLSI called ARM. That chip architecture would outlive the Newton by decades and end up inside every iPhone.
The cracks
The device could not do the one thing everyone tested first. Its handwriting recognition was, by contemporary accounts, iffy for ordinary words and abysmal for names, and the failure became a national joke: a week-long Doonesbury sequence in August 1993 mocked a Newton-like gadget garbling its owner's writing, and The Simpsons piled on. The collapse
Apple kept trying, improving the recognition and shipping better hardware through 1997's MessagePad 2100, but the Newton never became the hit it needed to be. When Steve Jobs returned to a nearly bankrupt Apple, he swept away side projects, and in 1998 he killed the Newton. Fans accused him of a grudge, the Newton had been Sculley's baby, and Sculley was the man who had ousted Jobs in 1985, but the more sober reading is that a company fighting for survival could not afford a costly product that had never paid off.
The aftermath
History treated the Newton more kindly than the market did. It is routinely cited as the definitive example of an Apple failure, yet almost everything it reached for arrived a decade later. When the iPhone launched in 2007, the technology, capacitive touch, real software, wireless data, had finally caught up, and Apple drew directly on what it had learned from the Newton for the iPod, iPhone, and iPad and, eventually, the Apple Pencil. And ARM, the chip the Newton forced into existence, became one of the most important processor architectures in the world.

Being first is worthless if the core technology is not ready, and the Newton is the canonical proof. It promised handwriting recognition the era could not deliver, and because that was the feature everyone tried immediately, the gap between the promise and reality defined the product in the public mind and no amount of later refinement could erase the joke. Price made it worse, asking a lot of money to be an early adopter of something that did not work.
