Google Podcasts
Google's dedicated podcast app, launched in 2018, never won a meaningful share of listeners against Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Overcast. In 2023 Google announced it would fold the app into YouTube Music, and by mid-2024 Google Podcasts was gone, the fourth time Google had asked podcast and music listeners to migrate to a new Google app in under a decade.

Narrative
The story
The ambition
Google Podcasts launched in June 2018 as Google's answer to a gap in its own lineup, a simple, free, ad-free podcast player built into Android and tied to Google's search and discovery strength. The pitch was that Google could use its indexing of podcast RSS feeds and its transcription technology to make shows easier to find and easier to listen to across devices, competing directly with Apple Podcasts and the independent apps that had carried podcast listening for a decade.
The rise
The app expanded from Android to iOS in March 2020, added a web player, and picked up a Material Design refresh. In May 2020 Google gave users a way to carry subscriptions over from the aging Google Play Music, positioning Podcasts as the durable home for the format. Over its life the app was installed more than 500 million times on Android devices worldwide, a large raw number that came from Android's default placement more than from listeners choosing it over rivals.
The cracks
Despite the install count, Google Podcasts never built real habitual listenership. Edison Research data cited in coverage of the shutdown put Google Podcasts at about 4 percent of weekly US podcast listeners, far behind Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Overcast, while YouTube itself, through ordinary video and music consumption, already reached roughly 23 percent of that same audience. Google was maintaining a dedicated app that most podcast listeners ignored while a property it already owned was absorbing listening anyway.
The collapse
On September 26, 2023, Google announced it would wind the Podcasts app down in 2024 and move podcast listening into YouTube Music, describing a plan to build a single destination that would reward creators and give listeners the best podcast experience. Google shipped a migration tool and let users export subscriptions as an OPML file for other apps. The US version of the app stopped working on April 2, 2024, other markets followed on June 24, 2024, and the final window to export subscription data closed months later. Google Podcasts, the app that had absorbed Google Play Music's podcast listeners four years earlier, was itself folded into the next Google audio product.
The aftermath
Listeners who wanted to stay inside Google's ecosystem were pushed into YouTube Music, which had only begun supporting podcasts in the US in 2023 and was still expanding the feature internationally as the older app shut down. Users who preferred not to move to YouTube Music could export their subscription list and rebuild it in a third-party app. Coverage of the shutdown also flagged a secondary risk: as with any large app removal, the migration window created an opening for phishing pages and fake replacement apps trying to catch users rushing to move their data before the deadline.
The lessons
A large install count is not the same as an engaged audience, and Google Podcasts carried the first without ever earning the second. Google had already tried building a podcast home once before, inside Google Play Music, and had already asked those users to move once, to Podcasts, in 2020. Four years later it asked them to move again, this time to YouTube Music, repeating a pattern the archive has recorded across Google Buzz, Google Wave, Google Reader, Google Allo, and Google Inbox, ship a product, fail to build a habit around it, and fold it into whatever the company has decided is the next consolidated destination. Each migration costs Google some of the trust that makes users willing to adopt the next app without hesitation.

Structured analysis
What Went Wrong
Root causes
Never won habitual listeners. Despite hundreds of millions of installs, Google Podcasts held only about 4 percent of weekly US podcast listeners, far behind Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Overcast. [3]
Redundant with YouTube's existing reach. YouTube already reached roughly 23 percent of weekly podcast listeners through ordinary video and music use, making a separate dedicated app for the same content redundant inside Google's own portfolio. [4]
Contributing factors
A history of repeated migrations. Google had already moved podcast listeners once before, from Google Play Music into Google Podcasts in 2020, meaning the 2024 shutdown asked some users to migrate a second time. [2]
Outmatched by dedicated podcast platforms. Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Overcast had years of head start and stronger listener habits, leaving Google Podcasts without a clear reason to exist for most listeners. [5]
Immediate trigger
Google folds Podcasts into YouTube Music. On September 26, 2023, Google announced it would discontinue the Podcasts app in 2024 and consolidate podcast listening into YouTube Music. [6]
Visible symptoms
Installs without listenership. The app's 500 million-plus Android installs masked a weekly listener share of only about 4 percent, a gap between distribution and actual use. [3]
Warning signs
YouTube already dominated podcast attention. Edison Research data showing YouTube capturing roughly 23 percent of weekly podcast listeners, versus 4 percent for Google Podcasts, signaled the dedicated app was fighting a losing battle against its own parent company's other property. [4]
